Polk County’s tennis team earned its first win of the season Wednesday, defeating Mountain Heritage in Western Highlands Conference action at Polk County.
The Wolverines (1-1, 1-0) dominated singles play en route to the conference victory, with top seed Cate Brown setting the tone with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win over Mountain Heritage’s Makayla Jones.
Polk County’s success continued through the upper portion of the singles lineup, with Paige White cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles and Virginia Then securing a 6-1, 6-2 win in the third position.

Mountain Heritage (0-1, 0-1) fought back in the middle of the lineup, with Lydia Smith earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Malia Robinette at No. 4 singles and Calia Wheeler following with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5. Polk County’s Evangeline Petoia closed out singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
In doubles action, Polk County’s top pairing of Brown and White dominated their match with an 8-0 victory over Jones and Mondragon. Mountain Heritage responded with wins at No. 2 doubles, where Anglin and Smith edged Then and Robinette in a tight 9-7 battle, and at No. 3, where Wheeler and Avalon topped Addie Buss and Petoia 8-4.
The victory marks an important conference-opening win for the Wolverines, who will look to build on this momentum when they travel to Avery on September 3 for another Western Highlands Conference match at 4 p.m.
