Polk County’s tennis team continued its winning ways Thursday with a 5-3 victory over conference rival Avery in Western Highlands Conference action in Newland.
The Wolverines (4-4) claimed four of six singles matches before splitting the doubles competition to secure the team win. The victory was the second this week for Polk over Avery.
Cate Brown set the tone for Polk County at No. 1 singles with a commanding 8-0 win over Braylen Payne. Paige White followed with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 singles, while Virginia Then earned a hard-fought 8-6 win in the third position.

Alex Smith provided another crucial point for the Wolverines at No. 5 singles, prevailing 8-6 over Monserrat Robles in a tightly contested match.
Avery’s points came from Sophia Schmidinger, who defeated Malia Robinette 8-5 at No. 4 singles, and Josie Wanner, who claimed an 8-6 victory over Leah Morton in the sixth position.
In doubles play, Polk County’s top duo of Brown and White defeated Payne and Bentley 8-3 to clinch the overall match victory. Avery’s team of Dean and Alma Hernandez captured the final point of the day with a thrilling 8-7 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Wolverines will look to extend their winning streak when they host Hendersonville on Monday in another key conference matchup.
