Polk County’s girls tennis season – and the school’s return to the 1A ranks – couldn’t have gone any better Tuesday.

The Wolverines made quick work of visiting North Henderson, rolling to a 9-0 victory over the Knights in the season opener for both squads.

The match marked the first athletic competition of the season for Polk County, which fell back to the 1A level in the current North Carolina High School Athletic Association realignment after eight seasons as a 2A school.

Polk County lost no more than two games in any singles match and three games in doubles play in recording the dominant win. Ten different players saw action in the victory.

“A great start for us with lots of players getting involved,” said Polk County head coach Richard Davis.

Continuing a busy opening week, the Wolverines are back in action on Wednesday, hosting Chapman, S.C. at 3 p.m.
