
Polk County’s individual girls tennis season came to an end Friday as the Wolverine entrants in the 1A West Regional were eliminated.
Polk’s doubles pair of Tana Harris and Julia Griffin won their first-round match, defeating Gray Stone Day’s Caroline Garner and Shanden Plyler 6-3, 6-0. But the Wolverines fell in the second round to Pine Lake Prep’s Kailey Patel and Sophia Taffett, 6-0, 6-1.
Patel and Taffett placed third overall. Top seed Lydia Cortes and Michelle Petrangeli of Bishop McGuinness won the regional doubles title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over East Surry’s Sarah Mann and Tara Martin.
Polk County’s Sara Muse suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Katie Dasher of Bishop McGuinness in the opening round. Dasher went on to finish fourth.
Pine Lake Prep’s Andersen Schubert defeated Gray Stone Day’s Emma Bost 6-4, 6-3 to win the regional title.
Polk County will host Chatham Central on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the second round of the state 1A team playoffs.
