Polk netters suffer WHC setback at Owen

2 min read

Owen extended Polk County’s challenging stretch on Monday, defeating the Wolverines 7-2 in a Western Highlands Conference tennis match in Swannanoa.

Despite a strong performance from Polk County’s Cate Brown at No. 1 singles, who defeated Madalynne Phillips 6-3, 6-4, the Warhorses dominated most of the individual matchups to secure the conference victory.

Owen (5-4, 3-1) showed its depth throughout the lineup, winning five of six singles matches. Aubrey Partlow set the tone at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Paige White, while Amaura Feste followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jill Brown at No. 3 singles.

The Warhorses continued their strong play with Layla Core, Annalie Price and Ace Drake each securing straight-set victories in the lower singles positions.

In doubles play, Polk County (1-4, 1-2) earned its second point when the Brown sisters captured an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. However, Owen’s tandems proved too strong at first and third doubles, with Phillips and Partlow combining for an 8-0 win at No. 1 and the duo of Emerson Kearns and Madison Mitchell securing an 8-2 victory at No. 3.

The loss marks the third straight defeat for the Wolverines, who will look to reverse their fortunes when they travel to Mountain Heritage on Wednesday.
