Polk County will open action in the state 1A girls tennis playoffs on October 22 after receiving a first-round bye.

The Wolverines, co-champions of the Western Highlands Conference and the league’s top 1A seed, will host the winner of Wednesday’s first-round match between Chatham Central and Thomas Jefferson.

Chatham Central enters with a 16-3-1 record while Thomas Jefferson is 6-2. Both teams finished second in their respective conferences, with two of Chatham Central’s losses coming to undefeated Gray Stone Day in conference play and both of Thomas Jefferson’s losses coming to undefeated Lincoln Charter in conference play.

Polk County will turn its attention this week to the 1A Western Regional, where Sara Muse will compete in singles and Tana Harris and Julia Griffin will be in the doubles draw.

The top four finishers at the regional, set for Friday and Saturday in Elkin, will advance to the state 1A tournament.
