Polk County thought it would be opening the NCHSAA 3A dual team girls tennis playoffs at home Monday.
The Wolverines earned the No. 11 seed in the 3A West bracket and were slated to host No. 22 West Caldwell in a first-round match. But the Warriors have opted to forfeit that match instead.
That means Polk County (6-4) will move on to Wednesday’s second round and will travel to Draughn, the sixth seed in the 3A West field.

West Caldwell finished the regular season 0-12. In a note to Polk County officials, West Caldwell head coach Michael Taladay noted the team only had five players, all freshmen and sophomores. The Warriors won just one individual match this season in those 12 contests.
Polk County’s Paige White, Addie Buss and Leah Morton have also qualified for the 3A West individual regional, set for Oct. 16-17 at Belmont Abbey College.
