Polk celebrates Senior Day with sweep of Avery

2 min read

The celebration was sweet Monday afternoon at Polk County as the tennis team’s lone senior received a perfect send-off on Senior Day during her shortened high school career.

Cate Brown, who will graduate a year early, capped off Senior Day festivities with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Avery’s Maddie Bentley at No. 1 singles, leading the Wolverines to an 8-0 sweep of the visiting Vikings.

The dominant performance improved Polk County’s record to 3-4 while dropping Avery to 0-5 on the season. For Brown, who also teamed with sister Jill Brown to capture the No. 1 doubles match 8-0, the victory provided a fitting effort for a day that honored her contributions to the program.

The Wolverines controlled play from the opening serve, with each of their six singles victories decided in straight sets. Paige White secured a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Virginia Then and Jill Brown each posted 6-1, 6-0 victories at the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Addie Buss nearly matched that dominance at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph, and Malia Robinette closed out singles competition with a 6-0, 6-4 victory.

In doubles play, the Brown sisters’ shutout victory was complemented by Zina Ishwar and Alexandria Smith, who captured the No. 2 doubles match 8-3.

Following the match, the team gathered for a small celebration with cake to honor Brown’s Senior Day, marking the end of an era for the early graduate who has been the squad’s veteran leader.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Thursday when Polk County travels to Avery.
