Polk County’s doubles team of Hannah Jenne and Tana Harris won their first two matches Friday in the 1A West Regional tennis tournament in Elkin, earning a berth in next week’s 1A state championships.

Jenne and Harris won their first match 6-0, 6-1 and then their second-round match 6-1, 6-1 to move into Saturday’s semifinals. The team, who were seeded second overall in the regional, will play that match at 9 a.m.

The state 1A championships will be held October 27-28 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary. First-round play will begin at 9 a.m.

Polk County freshman Julia Griffin, the Western Highlands Conference tournament champion, dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to North Stanly’s Merionne Hunt, who finished 13-2 this season playing No. 1 singles, in her first-round match.

“She played absolutely fabulous to have played against a number one seed,” said Polk County head coach Richard Davis.
