Cavaliers top Wolverines in season opener

East Rutherford claimed a 6-3 victory over Polk County on Monday in the season-opening tennis match for both programs in Bostic.

The Cavaliers won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests to secure the non-conference win.

Polk County’s Cate Brown delivered a strong performance at No. 1 singles, defeating East Rutherford’s Maresa Beheler 6-1, 6-1. The Wolverines also got a win from Malia Robinette at No. 6 singles, where she posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over K. Bailey.

But East Rutherford controlled the middle of the lineup, winning positions 2-5 in singles play. The most competitive match of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Layla Goforth outlasted Polk’s Paige White in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

In doubles action, Polk County’s top duo of Brown and Virginia Then earned a 6-4 victory over East Rutherford’s Gracie Emery and Beheler. The Cavaliers, though, took the final two doubles matches to seal the team victory.

Polk County will look to bounce back when the Wolverines return to action on August 27, hosting Mountain Heritage in their home and Western Highlands Conference opener.
