Polk County snapped Thursday a string of eight matches without a win, topping Chase 1-0 in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference girls soccer match in Forest City.
Elena Carroll’s goal late in the second half broke a scoreless battle and gave the Wolverines (3-10-2, 3-4-2) the victory.
Polk got the breakthrough goal in the 66th minute as Chase (2-11-1, 1-9) failed to clear a ball in the penalty area.
With the ball bouncing off the turf and into the air, Lauren Dotson reached the ball and headed it across the penalty area toward Carroll, who struck it perfectly off another bounce and tucked her shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Polk County narrowly missed another goal in the final minutes, a Hayden Blackwell shot bouncing off the post, but the Wolverine defense and goalkepper Maggie McCammon held firm to record the shutout, Polk’s second of the season.
The Wolverines are slated to travel Friday to Brevard for another conference match.
