Wolverines notch road shutout at Avery

Polk County scored four first-half goals and cruised to a 6-0 victory over Avery in Monday’s Western Highlands Conference girls soccer match in Newland.

The Wolverines built a 4-0 halftime lead and added two more goals in the second half to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Reeve Carroll opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing from the edge of the box off a pass from Jill Brown. Charley Dusenbury made it 2-0 in the 15th minute, scoring from four yards out at the back post on a low cross from Kenley Savaia.

Carroll added her second goal a minute later, converting a pass from Penelope Owyang at the top of the six-yard box. Gabby Savaia capped the first-half scoring in the 26th minute with an 18-yard shot into the top corner.

Dusenbury scored her second goal in the 48th minute off a through ball from Carroll, then Kenley Savaia finished the scoring in the 56th minute.

Cate Brown and Sofie Abrahamsen split time in goal and combined for three saves.

Polk County (5-1-4, 4-0-1 WHC) hosts conference leader Hendersonville on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
