Wolverines nip Rugby, move into tie for second in division

Polk County Middle’s girls soccer team picked up a key win on Monday, defeating Rugby 1-0 in Mills River.

The win moved Polk County Middle (6-3) into a tie for second with Rugby in the East Division of the Blue Ridge Middle School Conference. Both teams still have one game remaining with division leader Hendersonville as well as games with Flat Rock and Apple Valley.

The Wolverines got the winning goal in the second half off a corner kick. Ava Marino sent the corner into the penalty area, where Sydney Waldman brought it down and passed to Mireya Roman, who put the ball into the net for the game-winner.

“The girls came out strong after spring break,” said Polk Middle head coach Stephanie Luedi. “We played with intensity and hustled the whole way through. Rugby had quite a few more shots on goal, which Sara Muse did a great job scooping up.

“Our defense and midfield did a great job of staying with their attackers.”

Polk County returns to action on Monday, hosting undefeated Hendersonville Middle in the regular-season home finale for the Wolverines.
