Wednesday roundup: Polk soccer, baseball squads earn wins

Polk County won its third straight match on Wednesday night, rolling past Mitchell 9-0 in a Western Highlands Conference girls soccer match in Bakersville.

Ellese Cash scored two goals as eight different players scored for the Wolverines (4-2, 2-0), ranked eighth in the latest 2A state soccer coaches poll.

Also scoring for Polk County were Kayla McEntire, Sammie Firby, Szonja Pinter, Ashley Love, Talia Petoia, Jessica Bentley and Lyric Flood. Elena Preston had two assists, with Cassidy Campbell, Flood, Megan Clements, Sarah Phipps and Kara Overholt each adding one.

Malena Roman had one save for Polk County, which travels Thursday to T.C. Roberson.

BASEBALL
Polk County erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning en route to a 12-2 win over Mountain Heritage in Western Highlands Conference baseball action at Polk.

Morgan Groves scattered three hits, struck out five and had two hits offensively to lead the Wolverines, who picked up their second win of the season. Wes Brady drove in three runs for Polk (2-5, 1-1).

Mountain Heritage took a 4-1 win in JV play.

The Wolverines are at home again in Friday, hosting Mitchell. Junior varsity action begins at 4 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
