Smoky Mountain notches shutout of Polk County

Smoky Mountain held Polk County scoreless Monday en route to a 2-0 victory in a non-conference girls soccer match in Sylva.

The Mustangs (8-8-3) got goals from Aiden Nicholson and Gabby Rosas in recording the win.

Polk County dropped to 3-11-2 with the loss.

“We played hard and showed a little belief after the first 15-20 minutes,” said Polk County head coach Lennox Charles. “We played with eight varsity and seven JV players because of AP testing and one player in Oklahoma.

“We played with a lot more effort and confidence in the second half and, despite some pressure, we were able to keep them from scoring and create a couple opportunities. A good experience for the younger players and I’m extremely proud of the group.”

Polk goalkeeper Maggie McCammon finished with seven saves.

The Wolverines are set to return home Tuesday to host East Rutherford in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference match. That game is set to kick off around 7 p.m. following a junior varsity match at 5 p.m. between Polk County and Hendersonville.

Both matches will be shown live on NFHS Network.
