Polk tops NCSSM-Morganton, snares season’s first victory

Reeve Carroll scored three goals and Kenley Savaia added another as Polk County defeated NC School of Science & Math-Morganton 4-1 in Thursday’s non-conference girls soccer match at G.M. Tennant Stadium.

Carroll opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a spectacular goal off a corner kick. After Gabby Savaia played the ball out of the goal area back to Carroll on the right flank just outside the penalty area, Carroll struck a high arcing drive that fell just under the crossbar over the goalkeeper’s head.

Kenley Savaia made it 2-0 in the 38th minute when Gabby Savaia gained control of the ball high above the penalty arc and slipped a pass forward between two defenders into the penalty area. Kenley Savaia took a touch and hit a low shot just inside the near post.

Carroll extended the lead to 3-0 in the 43rd minute. With Polk County pressing forward, Gabby Savaia pushed a pass from the top of the penalty area to Carroll just above the penalty arc, and Carroll struck a drive inside the near post.

Carroll completed her hat trick in the 48th minute when she took a free kick from deep on the left wing and sent it over the goalkeeper into the right side of the net.

NCSSM-Morganton (1-2) scored in the final minutes to avoid the shutout.

Polk County (1-1-2) hosts Mitchell on Monday at 6 p.m.
