Sofie Abrahamsen’s play in goal this season for Polk County Middle has been a key factor in the Wolverines’ success.

Wednesday, with the team celebrating its eighth graders, Abrahamsen had an opportunity to enjoy a moment of offensive glory.

Late in Polk Middle’s 6-0 victory over Rugby Middle at Polk County Recreation Complex, Abrahamsen moved into the lineup at forward, and the Wolverines went to work to help their defensive leader break into the scoring column.

Teammate ScottLynn Whiteside sent a pass to Abrahamsen near midfield. Abrahamsen dribbled down the left wing, worked past a pair of Rugby defenders and sent a drive into the top right corner of the goal, finding the net with the final tally of the day.

Joy all around for Polk Middle

“This is one thing that it is about, our team coming together playing as a team, with smiles on their faces,” said Polk Middle head coach Jessica Marrow. “It’s never easy saying goodbye to our eighth graders, but it’s rewarding to see how far they have grown.

“We have a special team, a team that has positive attitudes on game days and at practices, and a team that puts in a lot of effort as well. A game well played tonight.”

Usual scoring leaders Reeve Carroll and Kenley Savaia did their usual things for Polk Middle, with Carroll scoring three goals and Savaia adding two. The Wolverines built a 3-0 lead at halftime, and Savaia and Carroll each scored in the first seven minutes of the second half to make certain the day would be one worth celebrating.

Abrahamsen and Carroll are among the seven eighth graders on the team, the others including Khloe Kitchen, Renee Bright, Molly Justice, Kaiah Miller and Jill Brown.

Rugby Middle (1-9) will get another shot at the Wolverines on Thursday as Polk Midde travels to Mills River for a 4:30 p.m. match.
