Wolverines outlast Mountaineers for conference road win

Bailey Staton scored 30 points as Polk County defeated Mitchell 49-43 in Friday’s Western Highlands Conference girls basketball game in Bakersville.

Staton made 13 of 22 free throws to lead the Wolverines (15-2, 5-2 WHC) to their 15th victory of the season.

Honesty Jackson added seven points for Polk County. Amiyah Waters scored six, Reeve Carroll finished with five and Sofie Abrahamsen had one.

Carroll contributed four assists and six steals, Waters grabbed eight rebounds and Abrahamsen pulled down five rebounds.

Mitchell fell to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Polk County is scheduled to host Mountain Heritage on Tuesday.
