The final score may not have reflected it, but Polk County’s girls basketball team delivered an effort Tuesday that left head coach Brandy Alm pleased.
The Wolverines dropped a 78-49 decision to Avery in a Western Highlands Conference matchup in Newland.
Avery (10-3, 3-0) built a 15-point halftime lead, then outscored Polk 20-4 in the third period. But despite the loss, Alm found reason to be happy with the outcome.

“We played very well,” she said.
Polk dropped to 1-11 overall, 0-4 in WHC play with the loss.
Ansley Lynch continued her solid play of late with 18 points and 12 rebounds, joined in the double-double group by Autumn Owen with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Mariah Overholt added 10 points, with Bella Marino and Anna McFadden each scoring two.
Polk County returns home on Friday for a non-conference clash with Landrum.
