Stingy Bears check Wolverines, pull away for victory

Canton Middle’s defense clamped down on Polk Middle, breaking open a close game en route to a 35-14 victory Thursday over the Wolverines in Polk’s home opener.

Polk Middle (0-2) battled Canton (2-0) on nearly even terms throughout the first half. Canton opened a 6-0 advantage to start the game, but baskets by Preslie Bradley and Kenzie Alm cut the deficit to 6-4 late in the first quarter.

The Bears inched ahead 14-7 early in the second period, but the Wolverines again battled back, with Alm scoring a basket and hitting a pair of free throws and Ryleigh Dill adding a foul shot as Polk closed within four at halftime at 16-12.

But Canton kept the Wolverines from scoring again until the final minute of the game, allowing the Bears to pull away and remain undefeated.

Alm had 10 points to lead the Wolverines, with Bradley and Dill each adding two.

Polk Middle is set to be back in action on Monday, traveling to Rugby Middle for a 4:30 p.m. battle.
