Smoky Mountain Middle pulled away in the second half Monday to hand Polk County Middle a 38-16 setback in the Wolverines’ season opener in Sylva.
Smoky Mountain led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but surged to a 21-12 lead at halftime. The Mustangs then held the Wolverines to just four points in the second half in taking the win.
Kenzie Alm led Polk Middle with six points, with Preslie Bradley scoring four. Lucy Tessnair, Camdyn Israel-Garrett and Ryleigh Dill each added two points.

The Wolverines will make their home debut on Thursday, tipping off at 4:30 p.m. against Canton Middle.
