A second-quarter flurry Friday helped power R-S Central to a 60-44 victory over Polk County in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference girls basketball matchup in Rutherfordton.

The Hilltoppers (8-11, 4-3) blew open a tight contest with a 25-point explosion in the second period, building a 40-22 halftime lead.

As usual, R-S Central relied on its backcourt duo of Jada Whitesides and Joyasia Smith. The two combined for 54 of R-S Central’s 60 points, with Whitesides scoring 28 and Smith scoring 26.

Polk County (9-5, 4-3) was led by Olivia Overholt’s 17 points. Brianna Gray had eight points, with Kinsley Huskey scoring seven.

Kylie Lewis had four points, with Gavionna Carson, Kiera Littlejohn, Tori Thompson and Mia Bradley each scoring two.

The Wolverines complete a three-game road trip on Monday, traveling to Brevard for another conference battle.
