Second-quarter spurt lifts Avery past Polk in WHC showdown

Avery County opened the second quarter with a 14-0 run and pulled away for a 68-53 victory over Polk County in Tuesday’s matchup of two of the Western Highlands Conference’s top girls basketball teams in Newland.

The Vikings (12-2, 4-1 WHC) led 18-13 after the first quarter before taking control with their second-quarter surge. Polk’s Amiyah Waters finally scored with 2:57 left in the half to make it 32-15, but Avery closed the period with a 10-2 run to build a 42-17 halftime lead.

Polk County (12-1, 3-1 WHC) rallied in the third quarter and pulled within 13 points late in the period and again early in the fourth, but couldn’t get closer.

Bailey Staton led the Wolverines with 21 points. Reeve Carroll and Amiyah Waters each added nine, Honesty Jackson scored seven, Sofie Abrahamsen finished with six and Charley Dusenbury had one.

Waters grabbed 10 rebounds, while Carroll contributed six steals, five rebounds and nine assists.

Polk County hosts Mitchell on Wednesday in another Western Highlands Conference matchup.
