Polk County's Brianna Gray

Second-half surge carries Hendersonville girls past Polk

Hendersonville slipped away in the second half Tuesday, engineering a 53-34 victory over Polk County in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup at Polk.

The MF7-leading Bearcats improved to 13-6 overall, 8-0 in league play. The Wolverines dropped to 10-8, 5-3.

How it happened: Polk kept pace with Hendersonville in the first period and were still poised to spring the upset at half, trailing just 17-13 despite scoring just two points in the second period.

But Mia Hasnen’s 3-pointer to open the third period sparked a 17-8 Hendersonville run that gave the Bearcats command of the game with a 38-21 advantage late in the third period.

Polk largely held its own in the fourth, but got no closer than 15 points in the quarter.

Scoring: Bailey Staton had 15 points to lead Polk County, with Kylie Lewis adding 10.

Mia Bradley finished with seven points while Jayden Duncan added two.

Next up: Polk County will host R-S Central on Thursday in a game originally scheduled for Friday.
