Bailey Staton poured in 33 points to lead Polk County to a 67-49 victory over East Rutherford in Monday’s season opener for both teams.
Staton scored 13 points in the first quarter and finished with six 3-pointers as the Wolverines (1-0) pulled away early and never allowed the Cavaliers back into the game.
Amiyah Waters opened the scoring with a 3-pointer before East Rutherford rallied for a 6-4 lead. But back-to-back 3-pointers by Staton and Reeve Carroll sparked a 13-0 Polk County run that gave the Wolverines a 19-6 advantage with 1:18 left in the first quarter.

Polk County led by as many as 20 points in the second quarter and took a 35-19 lead into halftime.
East Rutherford (0-1) closed to within 11 with four minutes remaining in the game, but Sofie Abrahamsen scored on a fast-break layup and Carroll converted a steal into a layup to push the lead to 61-46 with 3:28 to go.
Carroll finished with 16 points for Polk County. Honesty Jackson added seven, Abrahamsen scored six, Waters finished with three and Charley Dusenbury had two.
Bella Harris led East Rutherford with 16 points.
Polk County hosts Chase on Thursday in a non-conference game.
