Brianna Gray scored nine points as Polk Middle defeated Flat Rock Middle

Polk Middle girls overcome adversity, Flat Rock for first win

Sickness, injury, Flat Rock Middle – Polk County Middle’s girls basketball team overcame them all on Thursday.

The Wolverines earned their first win of the season, defeating Flat Rock 35-29 in a Blue Ridge Conference girls basketball game in Flat Rock.

Polk Middle (1-3) had a handful of players out with various ailments. But Brianna Gray scored nine points to lead a determined Wolverine squad that took a one-point lead into the final quarter and made it stand.

“I was proud of my girls and how much they fought,” said Polk Middle head coach Brian Taylor. “They were really scrappy and got after it.

“Mia Bradley and Brianna Gray showed a lot of toughness. We had some players out with injury and sickness, so we really needed other players to step up, and they did. The team worked hard and deserved that win.”

Bradley had seven points, with Bailey Staton and Paige Griffin each scoring five. Gavionna Carson and Kiki Littlejohn each scored four and Sarah Gray added one point.

The Wolverines return home Monday to face Brevard Middle at 4:30 p.m.
