Polk County Middle held on Thursday for a 21-19 victory over Hendersonville Middle in girls basketball action in Hendersonville.
The Wolverines improved to 2-0 with the Blue Ridge Conference win. Hendersonville Middle dropped to 1-1.
Polk Middle held a 15-13 lead entering the fourth period of the defensive tussle, then extended the lead to 17-13 with 3:48 remaining on Bailey Staton’s long jumper from just inside the 3-point line.
The Wolverines upped the advantage to 19-13 on a Gavionna Carson rebound and basket with 2:38 left. Following a Hendersonville score, Mia Bradley hit a jumper from the foul line with 1:38 remaining to give Polk a 21-15 edge.
Hendersonville got a basket with 47 seconds remaining, then cut the Polk lead to two with a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left. The Bearcats regained possession twice in the final seconds on their end of the floor, but Polk’s defense prevented Hendersonville from getting a good shot at a tying basket.
Carson led Polk Middle with seven points, followed by Bradley with six points. Jayden Duncan scored four points, with Staton and Kylie Lewis each adding two.
Polk Middle is set to return home on Monday to host Flat Rock Middle.
