Polk County Middle won a grind-it-out battle Thursday with Flat Rock Middle, topping the Eagles 21-17 in Blue Ridge Conference girls basketball play at Polk Middle.
The win for the Wolverines (6-4) proved even larger when Brevard Middle upended Hendersonville Middle. That leaves Polk, Flat Rock and Hendersonville all tied atop the BRC East Division with two games remaining.
Polk Middle trailed Flat Rock (7-3) at the half, 11-10, but surged in front in the second half by allowing the Eagles to score just six points in the final two quarters.

“Hard defensive aggression from both sides,” said Polk Middle head coach Seth Taylor. “I’m proud of the steps we are making.”
Preslie Bradley and Camdyn Isreal-Garrett each scored six points for Polk, with Lucy Tessnair adding four. Kenize Alm finished with three points and Ryleigh Dill added two.
Polk Middle will travel Wednesday to Brevard Middle before closing the season Thursday at home against Hendersonville Middle.
