Polk girls win at Landrum to complete season sweep

2 min read

Hayley Kropp scored 17 points and Sarah Phipps added 11 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday to lead Polk County to a 61-52 win over Landrum, giving the Wolverines a season sweep of their border rival.

Though not quite the rout that Friday’s 76-28 win over Landrum proved to be, a victory that included a 34-0 run to open the second half, the Wolverines (4-1) still led this one from start to finish.

Polk County opened a 13-0 lead at the start of the game and maintained that margin at the half. Landrum (1-2) cut the lead to 10 at 39-29 with 2:42 left in the third period before Janada Carson, Lyric Flood and India Godlock scored consecutive baskets to give Polk a 16-point bulge. Flood and Godlock scored following steals as Landrum again struggled with the Wolverines’ aggressive defense.

Landrum still trailed by 16 with some three minutes remaining before a 9-2 run cut the margin to nine with 1:15 left. Landrum then pulled within seven in the final minute before Ashley Kropp hit a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Polk County returns home Wednesday night to face East Henderson in its final non-conference game before the start of Western Highlands Conference play on Friday.
