Polk County's Kiera Littlejohn

Polk County will open play Tuesday in the state 1A girls basketball playoffs, hosting a postseason game for the first time in 15 years.

The Wolverines (15-10) earned the 10th seed in the 1A West bracket and will host 23rd-seeded Swain (11-14) in Tuesday’s opening round.

Swain was also Polk County’s opponent the last time the Wolverines hosted a state playoff game. That came at the end of the 2008-2009 season, an opening-round contest where Kiki Miller scored 15 points and Denise Edwards added 12 in leading Polk to a 45-38 win.

This year’s Maroon Devils enter with a roster dominated by freshmen and sophomores. Senior guard Triniti LittleJohn, sophomore guard Marlee Hicks and sophomore center Carley Teesateskie are among the Swain players to watch.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will face either seventh-seeded North Rowan or 26th-seeded Andrews in Friday’s second round.
