Polk County's Wesley Royster and teammates will get a third shot at Owen in the opening game of the Western Highlands Conference tournament

Polk girls at home, boys on road in WHC tournament openers

Polk County will open play Friday in the Western Highlands Conference basketball tournament, with the Wolverine girls hosting Madison and the Polk boys traveling to Owen.

The girls game is set to tip at 6 p.m. and will match the third-seeded Wolverines (14-7) against the sixth-seeded Patriots (3-20). Madison upset Polk County 64-51 earlier this season at Polk.

Admission for Friday’s game will be $7, with only NCHSAA and Western Highlands Conference passes accepted.

Polk County’s boys are expected to tip off at Owen at 7:30 p.m. The Wolverines (6-17) are seeded fifth in the tourney and split their two meetings this season with Owen (7-16), the fourth seed.

With a win, Polk’s girls would face Mitchell in the tourney semifinals while the Wolverine boys would face top seed Mountain Heritage.
