Polk County girls have no trouble with Chase in 71-28 romp

In an early-season week packed with three games, including a Friday date with rival Landrum, Wednesday’s easy victory over Chase certainly came at a good time for Polk County’s girls basketball squad.

The Wolverines raced to a 21-4 first-quarter lead and steadily pulled away en route to a 71-28 win over the Trojans in non-conference action at Polk.

With no junior varsity game scheduled, Polk County head coach Craig Culbreth stocked a full bench Wednesday night, unlike Tuesday’s 53-47 loss to North Henderson in which Polk County (2-1) dressed just eight players. The large margin meant that all of those players saw playing time, a welcome break on the second of two straight nights of action.

“After a tough loss, it was good to come back and have such a good game,” Culbreth said. “Everyone got a lot of playing time, so that’s good experience for us.”

Fielding a young squad, Chase (1-2) struggled with Polk’s pressure defense throughout the night, allowing the Wolverines to routinely convert turnovers into fast-break baskets in building a 35-13 halftime edge. Polk then outscored Chase 20-3 over the final five minutes of the third period, with Hayley Kropp scoring six points and Sarah Phipps four in that run. That spurt gave the Wolverines a 58-22 lead entering the final quarter.

“We got to try a lot of different things,” Culbreth said. “I still see some weaknesses, especially with our rotation and some other things. Tomorrow we’ll work on that. We’ve got a tough game on Friday to prepare for.”

Lyric Flood led Polk County with 13 points. Kropp narrowly missed a triple-double, scoring 11 points with 10 steals and seven assists, while Phipps had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman India Godlock also reached double figures with 10 points.

Polk County Scoring
Lyric Flood 13, Hayley Kropp 11, Sarah Phipps 10, India Godlock 10, Ashley Kropp 8, Janada Carson 8, Ashley Love 5, Savannah Ross 2, Kennia Simpson 2, Katelyn Miller 2
