Mitchell girls halt Polk County’s winning streak

Mitchell brought Polk County’s 11-game winning streak to an end Friday with a dominant 65-34 victory in Bakersville.

The Mountaineers (10-4, 3-1) grabbed a 33-16 halftime lead, then raced away to a 50-20 lead at the end of the third quarter to claim the win.

Polk County (12-2, 3-1) suffered its first setback since a Dec. 5 loss to R-S Central.

Olivia Overholt led Polk County with 14 points, with Emmie McDowell and Marissa Twitty each scoring five. Kristen Hall had four points, with Sara Muse, Rachael Davis and Emily Prince each adding two.

Polk County returns home Tuesday to host defending 2A state champion Mountain Heritage in another Western Highlands Conference matchup.
