Mitchell kept Polk County’s offense in check Friday, handing the Wolverines a 59-39 loss in the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference basketball tournament in Ledger.
The Mountaineers (15-9) held the Wolverines (6-17) to just 16 points in the second half in expanding a 32-23 halftime edge.
Olivia Overholt finished with eight points to lead Polk County, which also got five points each from Emmie McDowell and Ansley Lynch. Four Wolverines – Tori Thompson, Mariah Overholt, Kristen Hall and Marissa Twitty – each scored four points while Sara Muse added three.
Rachael Davis finished with two points for Polk County, which will find out next Saturday whether they’ve earned an at-large berth to the state 1A basketball tournament. Some projections have placed the Wolverines in the 64-team field.
