Polk County held its own for two and a half quarters Tuesday against Brevard, but a pair of second-half offensive dry spells eventually doomed the Wolverines in a 52-42 loss at Polk.
The Wolverines (1-8) matched baskets with Brevard (7-4) throughout the first half, trailing just a point at the break. Polk then opened the third period with baskets from Autumn Owen, Sara Muse and Ansley Lynch to take a 28-23 lead with 5:21 left in the quarter.
Polk, though, wouldn’t score again until 1:37 remained in the period, allowing Brevard to score 13 straight points and build a 36-28 lead.
The Wolverines, though, answered with eight straight points, evening the game at 36-36 with 6:51 left on a Muse jumper. But another scoreless spell of more than four minutes allowed Brevard to take a 45-38 lead, and the Blue Devils never led by less than six the rest of the way.
“We didn’t hit our free throws and didn’t hit our layups, and that’s the difference in the game,” Alm said. “We fell behind and then we had to foul and they hit their free throws.
“The effort was there. We never gave up and we played hard until the end. We’re making baby steps right now. We just need to put four quarter together.”
Owen had 24 points to lead Polk County, with Lynch and Muse each scoring seven. Bella Marino and Mariah Overholt had two points each for the Wolverines, who travel Wednesday to face East Henderson in their final pre-holiday game.
Tristen Berry scored 18 pints and Hannah Cabe had 16 to lead Brevard.
