Late scoreless spell sinks Wolverines in WHC setback

2 min read

The pattern has become painfully familiar for Polk County’s girls basketball team.

For the third time in three weeks, the Wolverines fought their way back from a deficit, clawed to within striking distance, then watched helplessly as an opponent closed with a momentum-crushing run while Polk County went scoreless.

Mountain Heritage’s 19-0 run to finish Thursday’s Western Highlands Conference game delivered a 58-37 victory for the Cougars (13-5, 5-2 WHC), following the same script as Polk County’s previous two losses. Avery used a 14-0 second-quarter run in a 68-53 victory on Jan. 13, and Hendersonville deployed a 15-0 fourth-quarter surge in a Jan. 16 win.

This time, Polk County (15-3, 5-3 WHC) had pulled within 39-37 on Bailey Staton’s two free throws with 6:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines wouldn’t score again.

Mountain Heritage’s Massie Neill and Layla Silver combined for 11 points during the decisive run, with Neill finishing with 19 points and Silver adding 13.

The game had followed a back-and-forth pattern through three quarters. Mountain Heritage ground out a 14-4 lead early in the second quarter before Staton took over, scoring 11 consecutive Polk County points – a 3-pointer, a three-point play, two free throws and another 3-pointer from the corner despite heavy defensive pressure – to give the Wolverines a 15-14 lead.

The teams traded baskets before Mountain Heritage’s Callie Capps hit a layup and 3-pointer in the final 46 seconds of the half to put the Cougars up 24-19 at the break.

The Cougars led by as many as eight in the third period, but Staton’s 3-pointer and two free throws, combined with a Sofie Abrahamsen layup following a Reeve Carroll steal and pass, cut the lead to 34-33 with 1:24 left in the quarter. Mountain Heritage took a 36-33 lead into the fourth.

Carroll’s layup to open the final period made it 36-35. Mountain Heritage pushed the lead back to 39-35 before Staton’s two free throws made it 39-37, setting the stage for the Cougars’ game-ending surge.

Staton led Polk County with 22 points. Honesty Jackson added six, Abrahamsen scored four, Charley Dusenbury finished with three and Carroll had two.
