Late run lifts Madison Middle past Polk Middle

Madison Middle rallied down the stretch to defeat Polk County Middle 30-25 in Thursday’s Blue Ridge Conference basketball action at Polk Middle.

The Patriots (2-0) got 18 points from twins Aaliyah Austin and Jayda Austin, including a go-ahead 3-pointer by Jayda Austin with 45 seconds remaining that broke a 25-25 tie. Jayda Austin added two free throws with 11 seconds left to seal the victory.

Madison opened a 6-0 lead before Emory Dow hit a 3-pointer for Polk County (0-2). The Cougars battled back in the second quarter as Myrakle Gary and Kenzie Alm scored baskets to give Polk an 9-8 lead. Emily Dotson’s basket with 38 seconds left in the half made it 12-11 at the break.

Dotson scored early in the third quarter to give Polk its first lead at 15-14, and the teams swapped leads throughout the period before Alm’s jumper put the Cougars up 22-19 heading into the fourth.

With the score tied at 24-24 in the fourth quarter, Dotson hit a free throw with 2:17 remaining to put Polk up 25-24. Aaliyah Austin tied it with a free throw before her sister’s 3-pointer proved to be the difference.

Alm led Polk County with nine points. Dotson added seven, Dow scored five and Gary finished with four.

Polk County Middle travels to Hendersonville Middle on Monday.
