Trailing by a point at halftime Thursday, Polk County Middle’s girls basketball team looked in prime position to earn its second win of the season.
An icy shooting effort on a chilly day, though, spoiled those hopes as Brevard Middle edged away for a 33-21 victory in Blue Ridge Middle School Conference action at Polk Middle.
The Wolverines (1-7) hung tough with a Brevard team that currently sits in second place in the Blue Ridge East Division, down 12-11 at the half and 20-15 at the end of the third period.

But the easiest of shots – free throws and layups – refused to fall for the Wolverines, and Brevard overcame a 12-of-24 effort at the free-throw line to secure the win.
“We were 2-of-13 at the foul line and missed a lot of layups,” said Polk Middle head coach Michelle Fagan.
Bre Kenan scored 12 points and Ansley Lynch had nine for the Wolverines, who travel to Rugby on Monday.
“We’ll come back tomorrow and keep working at it,” Fagan said.
