Polk County's Gavionna Carson

Polk County certainly saved its best for last Friday.

The Wolverines exploded for 33 points in the fourth quarter, pulling away to hand Patton a 69-47 defeat in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference girls basketball action in Morganton.

Polk is now 10-7 overall, 5-2 in conference play. Patton dropped to 2-16, 2-5.

How it happened: Polk County took a nine-point lead at halftime. But Patton hit 12-of-15 free throws in the third quarter and rallied to even the score entering the final eight minutes.

The comeback seemed to awaken Polk’s offense, which went on a tear for its highest point total in any quarter this season. Bailey Staton had 15 points in the quarter and Mia Bradley added eight to fuel the Polk surge.

Scoring: Staton finished with a season-high 31 points, with Kylie Lewis scoring 15 and Bradley adding 13.

Jayden Duncan added six points, with Sarah Gray and Gavionna Carson each scoring two.

Next up: Polk County will host MF7-leading Hendersonville on Tuesday.
