First-half flurry powers Mountain Heritage girls past Polk County

Defending state 2A champion Mountain Heritage showed Monday that it’s ready for another title run, downing Polk County 74-43 in girls basketball action in Burnsville.

The Cougars (17-5, 9-0) built a 48-17 halftime lead en route to moving closer to another undefeated run through the Western Highlands Conference with the win.

Polk County dropped to 13-7 overall, 4-5 in WHC play. The Wolverines travel Tuesday to Avery and can wrap up sole possession of third place in the conference with a victory.

Polk County is assured of hosting a first-round game in the WHC tournament on Friday.

Olivia Overholt led Polk County with 15 points, with Rachael Davis scoring nine. Kaylin Jenkins and Tori Thompson each added five points.

Sara Muse, Kristen Hall, Marissa Twitty and Emmie McDowell each scored two points, with Emily Prince adding one.
