Polk Middle's Raney Tallon tries to power to the basket during the second half of Wednesday's game

Brevard Middle held off Polk Middle in the final two minutes Wednesday, ekeing out an 18-17 victory in Blue Ridge Conference girls basketball action at Polk Middle.

The Blue Devils completed a season sweep of Polk and improved to 6-5 overall, 5-4 in East Division play. The Wolverines dropped to 7-4, 5-4.

How it happened: Polk Middle took an 11-8 lead at halftime as Beija Olivari closed the second quarter with three straight points.

Brevard, though, held Polk Middle scoreless in the third period and rallied for a 14-13 lead. Two Raney Tallon free throws with 4:16 left in the final quarter broke the Wolverines’ scoring drought, and Polk eventually took a 17-14 lead with three minutes to go on two Sofie Abrahamsen foul shots.

But the Wolverines would not score again, and Brevard got baskets from Shaneera Carrington and Samara Griffin to take the lead with 2:06 remaining. Those baskets eventually decided the outcome.

Scoring: Tallon led Polk Middle with nine points, with Olivari scoring five. Abrahamsen finished with two points and Jill Brown added one.

Next up: Polk Middle travels Thursday to Rugby Middle for its final regular-season game of the season. With a win, the Wolverines would force at least a two-way tie for second place in the East Division and possibly a three-way tie.

With a loss, Polk Middle can do no better than finish tied for third with Brevard, and with the Devils sweeping the season series, that would make Polk the East Division’s fourth seed and send the Wolverines to Macon Middle in the opening round of the BRC postseason tournament.
