Polk County will travel to Hayesville for the opening round of the state 1A girls basketball playoffs according to official brackets released Sunday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The Wolverines (15-8) earned the 18th seed in the 1A West bracket and will travel to face the 15-12 Yellow Jackets. Hayesville, the 15th seed, finished tied for third in the Big Smoky Mountain Conference and is led by junior center Breanna Foster and senior guard Jade Patterson.

It marks the second straight playoff berth for the Polk girls program, the first time that has happened since the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

The first-round matchup is slated for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the game between No. 2 Alleghany and No. 31 East Wilkes.

Western Highlands Conference 1A rivals Mitchell (No. 3) and Avery (No. 28) also earned playoff berths.

Polk County’s boys did not earn a playoff berth.
