Polk County earned a runner-up finish Monday in a Western Highlands Conference girls golf match at Black Mountain Golf Course in Black Mountain.
The Wolverines posted a team score of 169, placing behind Avery’s winning total of 137. Owen finished third at 174. Mountain Heritage, Mitchell and Hendersonville did not field full teams.
The teams played the back nine at Black Mountain, which includes one of the world’s longest holes, the par-6 17th. The hole played 640 yards for Monday’s competitors.

Avery’s Sydney Kulhan led all players with a 42. Mountain Heritage’s Mallie Buchanan followed with a 44, while Avery’s Karlie Calhoun (47), Owen’s Scout Schermerhorn (48) and Avery’s Erika Ralston (48) rounded out the top five.
Addie Buss paced Polk County with a 55 to place eighth overall. Buss was also one of only two players in the field to bogey the 17th hole.
Reeve Carroll and Charley Dusenbury each shot 57 to tie for 12th, while Chloe McGill and Sofie Abrahamsen each carded 62 to tie for 15th.
Polk County will return to action Thursday, hosting WHC schools at Bright’s Creek. Play begins at 3 p.m.
