Polk County’s girls golf team demonstrated competitive spirit and steady improvement Monday at Black Mountain Golf Course, finishing third among five Western Highlands Conference schools in challenging mountain conditions.
The Wolverines posted a team score of 165, positioning themselves solidly in the middle of the conference pack. Avery dominated the field with a 126, followed by Mountain Heritage’s 153.
Avery’s Sydney Kulhan led all competitors with a 1-over-par 37, while teammate Kendall Kulhan shot 44. The Vikings placed four golfers in the top five individual positions, with Karlie Calhoun and Molly Forbes both carding 45s to round out their scoring.

Mountain Heritage’s Mallie Buchanan provided the lone non-Avery golfer in the top five with a 41.
For Polk County, Charley Dusenbury led the Wolverines’ effort with a 52, finishing 10th overall in the individual standings. Reeve Carroll followed closely with a 53 for 11th place, while Sofie Abrahamsen contributed a 60 to finish 15th.
Mitchell finished fourth with 167, just two strokes behind Polk County, while Owen rounded out the team competition at 169. Hendersonville was unable to field a complete team for the conference match.
The Wolverines will look to build on Monday’s performance when they host the next Western Highlands Conference match Thursday at Tryon Country Club. The nine-hole competition begins at 2 p.m.
