Polk County competed in its first team girls golf match since 2019 on Tuesday at Forest City Municipal Golf Course, finishing third in a three-team field as the Wolverines marked their return to the sport.
The Wolverines posted a team score of 150 on the nine-hole, par-36 course, finishing 18 strokes behind winner West Lincoln (132) and 13 strokes back of East Rutherford (137) in the season-opening match.
Senior Charley Dusenbury led Polk County’s scoring with a 47, placing fifth among individual competitors and providing a bright spot in the program’s long-awaited return. Her round represented the lone top-five finish for the Wolverines.

Polk County’s Addie Buss carded a 51 and placed sixth, followed by Reeve Carroll at 52, while Sofie Abrahamsen (62) and Chloe McGill (63) rounded out the team scoring.
“All five of them represented the Wolverines,” said Polk County head coach Byon Morrisey. “(They) will be learning and applying between now and our next opportunity on Sept. 4, and began building their respective collections of good shots and good decisions.
“Their grownups were enthusiastic witnesses to the event, making it quite the special afternoon for all.”
West Lincoln’s depth proved decisive, with medalist Melony Hoffman shooting even-par 36 and teammate Aynsley Howard contributing a 45. East Rutherford second behind strong individual performances from Saige Harris (38) and Kaitlyn Francis (43).
Polk County faces its next test Sept. 4 when it travels to Grassy Creek Golf Club to face Mitchell.
