A dominant first half Thursday evening carried Polk County’s junior varsity to a 50-6 victory over Madison in G.M. Tennant Stadium.
The Wolverines (1-2, 1-0) won their Western Highlands Conference opener with a first-half effort that resulted in a 50-0 halftime margin. Madison scored its only touchdown late in the second half.
Polk raced to a 30-0 lead in the first quarter. Deaken Nodine started the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, then intercepted a Madison pass some 30 seconds later and returned it 66 yards for a score. Nodine then caught a pass from Lawson Carter for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 lead with 6:22 remaining in the first period.
Vincent Twitty recovered a Madison fumble on the enusing kickoff, and the Wolverines soon scored again, with Alex Tipton bursting up the middle for a 5-yard scoring run. Tipton added the 2-point conversion for a 22-0 advantage.
Tipton then closed the Wolverine scoring in the opening quarter with a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown. Carter and Nodine teamed on the 2-point conversion to up the Polk lead to 30-0.
The Wolverines then scored three times in the second period, those coming on a 39-yard Twitty run, a 34-yard Nodine run and a 5-yard Tipton run with 39 seconds left in the half.
Polk County will return to action next Thursday, traveling to Owen for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
