MARSHALL – Polk County’s recent run of frustration continued Friday.
A pair of crucial penalties and a pair of Madison second-half touchdowns helped lead to the Wolverines’ fourth straight setback, a 27-22 loss to the Patriots in a Western Highlands Conference clash.
Polk (2-6, 0-4) scored first and led for all but the final three minutes of the game. That’s when Madison (4-4, 2-2) capped a 69-yard, 11-play drive with Dallas Barnett’s 22-yard touchdown scamper, the quarterback perfectly faking a handoff on a third-and-3 play and racing around left end for the go-ahead score with 2:50 remaining.

R.J. Simpson’s ensuing 26-yard kickoff return gave Polk possession at the 43. But three plays there netted just two yards, and Madison batted down a halfback pass from Loreynzo Sanchez on fourth down to seal its win.
Early in the third period, you wouldn’t have bet on that outcome.
Polk took a 22-13 lead at halftime, nearly extending that when Nolan Simpson intercepted a Barnett pass as time expired and threaded his way through Madison’s offense for an apparent touchdown. A blocking penalty, though, negated that score, leaving the Wolverines up nine at the break.
The Wolverines then forced a punt on the Patriots’ first drive of the second half, taking over at the Madison 47, and steadily marched toward the goal line. Sanchez found the end zone from the 9, but a holding penalty also wiped out that score, and Polk eventually turned the ball over on downs at the 11.
On Madison’s first play, senior Ivan Blankenship bounced outside and raced down the home sideline for an 89-yard scoring sprint. That score cut Polk’s lead to 22-20, but also revived the Patriots, especially on defense – Polk County didn’t pick up a first down on any of its final three possessions and had just 13 total yards on those drives.
Momentum didn’t just switch sides – it all but donned a jersey and waved from across the field.

A 60-yard catch-and-run by Styler Blackwell set up Polk’s first score, a 4-yard run by Sanchez on the Wolverines’ opening drive. Sanchez added the 2-point conversion for an early 8-0 lead.
Madison answered late in the quarter, cutting the lead to 8-6, before Polk struck again early in the second quarter. Brody Wilkins found Acer Eadus open across the middle, and the tight end shrugged off a would-be tackler and rumbled to the end zone, completing the 58-yard play for his first career touchdown. Blake Anderson’s extra point made it 15-6.
Madison responded again with a score on Gavin Gault’s 7-yard run midway through the period, but the Wolverines had one final punch to deliver, getting the ball in the final minute of the half and scoring on Wilkins’ 21-yard touchdown toss to Simpson with 11 seconds left in the quarter.
Save for that penalty flag on his interception, Simpson would have scored twice in those final 11 seconds.
Polk County would certainly have welcomed that.
The Wolverines have a bye week before hosting Avery on Oct. 24.
