Polk County scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to claim an 18-7 win Thursday over R-S Central in junior varsity football action in Rutherfordton.
The Wolverines (1-1) trailed 7-6 entering the final period, but scored early in the quarter on a Mackus Simpson 61-yard run to take a 12-7 lead.
R-S Central fumbled on the second play of its next possession, with Polk’s William Simpson recovering at the 15. Casey Beiler then added an insurance touchdown with 5:55 remaining on a 4-yard run.
The Hilltoppers scored on the first drive of the game to take a 7-0 advantage, but Polk responded early in the second period as Beiler hit Jacob Knighton on a 14-yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed, leaving the Wolverines trailing 7-6.
Polk County is off next week before traveling to East Henderson on Sept. 19.
