Polk Middle's Karlen McEntyre races past two Brevard Middle defenders during his 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown

Blue Devils spoil Wolverines’ season opener

Brevard Middle scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 90 seconds of the first half Thursday and went on to hand Polk Middle a 40-6 defeat at Utz Field.

The Wolverines fell to their Blue Ridge Conference East Division rivals as the delayed 2020 season finally kicked off.

A tight contest firmly tilted Brevard’s way in the waning minutes of the second quarter as the Blue Devils scored on a pair of touchdown passes, one of those on a fourth-and-goal from the 14.

The latter score made it 20-0 with four seconds left in the half. Polk Middle’s Karlen McEntyre quickly cut the gap to 14 points with a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with no time left in the half.

That would be all the scoring for the Wolverines, though, as Brevard tallied three times in the final two quarters to put the game out of reach.

Polk Middle is back in action next Thursday, traveling to Apple Valley Middle in a game that will be streamed live via the NFHS Network.
