Wolverine boys run to fifth-place showing at Armentrout Invitational

Wednesday’s rainy weather didn’t deter Polk County cross country runners as the Wolverines competed in the Armentrout Invitational at R-S Central.

In a nine-team field with a handful of Mountain Foothills 7 Conference foes, Polk County’s boys placed fifth. Brevard had three of the top seven runners to win the team competition, followed by Owen, R-S Central and Avery.

Braxton Edwards led Polk County with an 11th-place effort in a time of 18:14.91. Mark Teague followed in 19th in 18:48.82.

Brevard’s Knox Witherspoon finished in 16:27.91 to take top honors, with teammate Abdi Green second in 16:49.88.

Polk County’s girls didn’t field a full team, but did have a pair of runners in the top 12 as Olivia Overholt took sixth with a time of 21:41.72 and Tori Thompson finished 11th in 22:23.95.

Brevard’s Lucy Murray won the race with a time of 19:52.06.

The Wolverines are slated to finish their regular season on Saturday, competing in the 49th Annual Trailblazer Invitational at Daniel Boone High School in Gray, Tenn.
